St. Thomas is known as the “Railway Capital of Canada” due to the many railway lines that channel through the city. It is also known for the life sized monument of Jumbo the Elephant. In 1885, P.T. Barnum’s circus featured an unusually large elephant named Jumbo. Tragically, while in St. Thomas, Jumbo lost his life in a train accident. In 1985 a life-sized monument was erected in memory of Jumbo and is located at the west end of Talbot Street. A 5 minute drive south will bring visitors to Lake Erie for public swimming, recreation and boating. St. Thomas, although a relatively small city, offers a well-developed art & theatre scene.
